A very complex situation on Tuesday. Firstly some light wintry showers will affect some Northern and Eastern areas of Scotland at times, perhaps giving some accumulations. Icy Roads could be quite a problem locally so take extra care.
The main focus of the day is towards the South as an Atlantic Low attempts to push up but will be put into a battleground situation across Wales and The Midlands. Precipitation will be slow moving allowing cold air to undercut. In Inland Wales and the Midlands, particularly the West Midlands, precipitation could turn to snow which will be heavy and prolonged. Higher areas could see severe problems. Lower ground could see snowfall too though perhaps a bit more marginal here.
Areas North of the M4 will mostly see the snow while south if here will see rain. There is a risk that snow may turn rather sleety or to rain at times as slightly milder air may nudge a little bit further North for a time but this is only a chance.
It will be rather breezy on Tuesday and perhaps windy meaning where there is snow there will be local Blizzards particularly on higher ground. This will cause some drifting.
Where snow falls, travel disruption is possible which could become severe in parts. Disruption to power supply in the worst affected areas is also another possibility. Higher ground in Wales could see in excess of 25cm or near a foot of snow. Lower ground of Wales and the West Midlands (particularly West of Birmingham) could see between 5-15cm. Elsewhere may see upto 5cm-perhaps locally a bit more.
As this is so marginal there is a chance some may recieve rain or sleet when snow was forecast and it is quite possible some will have this issue.
This situation will be watched very closely and updated if necessary during Tuesday.
