Synopsis

The uncertainty raised in last night's forecast has been cleared quite little today. It still looks very marginal for parts of Central England and parts of Wales.

Firstly, some light wintry showers will continue over NE and NW Scotland for the rest of the day but these should ease later on. Watch out for icy roads locally.

The main interest today is in England and Wales where slightly milder air is trying to push in. The uncertainty is whether and where any wintriness will fall as it meets the cold air that has been sustained over the UK for a while now. For central areas and parts of Wales it lookes extremely marginal. In the Sleet region most can expect rain/sleet. There could be a widespread problem with Freezing rain for a time making conditions for driving dreadful locally. Freezing rain can be very dangerous and if it is bad then unnecessary journeys should be avoided.

Further south than the edge of the sleet region Freezing rain is the biggest problem with some sleet locally though this will clear soon.

Locally however in the Sleet region there may be some snow, particularly in heavier precipitation. Where this will fall is very uncertain. Some higher ground in the West Midlands, Staffordshire and Shropshire and perhaps some parts of the East Midlands e.g Derbyshire would be most likely to see more wintriness than others.

As the precipitation heads into North Wales and Northern England, much of the precipitation could fall as snow especially on higher ground though not exclusively. Intensity will vary though a few cm of snow could fall in places.

Overall this situation is very marginal and it could go either way. One of the more important things to watch out for many is Ice for a time as conditions could get very tricky.

If anything dramatically changes a further update may be issued.
